Channel 4 has announced an eight-part television adaptation of Caroline O’Donoghue’s hit novel “The Rachel Incident,” bringing together an impressive creative team including “Hacks” co-creator Jen Statsky. The series will be produced by UCP in partnership with Element Pictures, known for “Normal People” and “Poor Things.”
The story follows Rachel, a bookstore worker who falls in love at first sight with James, an effervescent and proudly heterosexual man who becomes her roommate. Set against the backdrop of pre-financial crash Cork City, their friendship takes an complicated turn when Rachel develops feelings for her married professor, Dr. Fred Byrne, leading to a web of secrets involving James, Rachel, Fred, and Fred’s well-connected wife, Deenie.
O’Donoghue, who has adapted her own novel for the screen, expressed her excitement about the project: “Channel 4 and Element have, between them, created some of the best relationship dramas on TV. I’m incredibly lucky.” The New York Times bestselling author will work closely with Emmy winner Jen Statsky, who joins as executive producer.
Channel 4’s Drama Director Ollie Madden praised the adaptation as “undeniably funny, razor-sharp in its honesty and observation, but bursting with heart and genuine emotion.” Element Pictures highlighted the story’s appeal, noting how it “weaves smart, witty comedy with genuine moral dilemmas and pathos.”
The series marks a significant addition to Channel 4’s drama slate, promising to blend Irish charm with universal themes of love, friendship, and self-discovery. While casting details are yet to be announced, the production team’s track record, including Element Pictures’ success with “Normal People,” suggests this adaptation will be one to watch.
The project represents O’Donoghue’s first television adaptation of her work, with the author currently preparing for the release of her seventh novel, “Skipshock,” in June.
