BAFTA-winning writer Jack Thorne is set to bring his first-ever romantic drama to Channel 4 with “Falling,” a compelling six-part series that explores faith, love, and modern society through an unexpected relationship between two devoted religious figures.
The drama, produced by The Forge Entertainment (known for “National Treasure” and “The Buccaneers”), follows Anna, a nun who has spent most of her adult life in a convent, and David, a Catholic priest leading his Bristol community. Their forbidden romance forces them to confront challenging questions about their vows, faith, and relationship with God.
Channel 4’s Director of Film4 and Drama, Ollie Madden, describes the series as “achingly romantic” and “quietly subversive,” praising Thorne’s examination of religion in contemporary society. The acclaimed writer, known for “Help,” “Kiri,” and “His Dark Materials,” brings his characteristic depth to this unique love story.
“Jack has created two central characters in Anna and David who feel deeply but hold their faith equally deeply. That puts them in an impossible position,” says George Ormond, executive producer at The Forge. The series promises to be both moving and insightful as it explores this complex dynamic.
The production team includes veteran producer Joe Donaldson (“Cobra,” “Peaky Blinders”) and director Peter Hoar, fresh from his success with “The Last of Us” and “It’s A Sin.” While casting details are yet to be announced, the series represents a significant addition to Channel 4’s drama slate.
“Falling” marks a departure from Thorne’s previous work, offering a contemporary take on faith, love, and personal conviction in modern Britain. The six hour-long episodes will be distributed internationally by Banijay Rights, with filming expected to begin in the near future.
