Award-winning comedy-drama “The Dry” has been commissioned for a third series by ITV, following impressive streaming figures for its first two seasons. The announcement comes as the show’s second series prepares to air on ITV1 from January 12th, having already garnered 2 million streams on ITVX.
The series, which has accumulated over 8.2 million streams across its first two seasons, will continue to follow the story of recovering alcoholic Shiv Sheridan, played by Roisin Gallagher. The third series promises to delve deeper into the Sheridan family dynamics, with a shocking family secret set to challenge their already fragile relationships.
Award-winning playwright Nancy Harris returns as writer alongside director Paddy Breathnach for the new series, which will stream exclusively on ITVX in 2026. The upcoming season will explore themes of change and self-discovery, with Shiv forced to confront whether her problems stem from more than just her past and her relationship with alcohol.
“I’m so excited to be returning for a third series of The Dry,” said Nana Hughes, Head of Scripted Comedy at ITV. “It’s such a special show and we look forward to bringing more of the Sheridan family to screens later in the year on ITVX.”
The show has proven particularly successful in Ireland, where it has reached over 1.2 million streams on RTÉ Player. Element Pictures will continue to produce the series in association with RTÉ, Fís Eireann/Screen Ireland, and ITV Studios.
Writer Nancy Harris expressed her enthusiasm for the new series, saying, “Season 3 digs into the roots of the Sheridans dysfunctional dynamic, unearthing long held secrets and taking our characters in new and unexpected directions. It’s going to be a wild ride.”
The regular cast is expected to return alongside Gallagher, with additional casting details to be announced. ITV Studios will handle global distribution for what Element Pictures’ Emma Norton describes as the show’s “grand finale.”
